Tea. The elixir of life. A luxury steeped deep in tradition and one that celebrates the bounties of the earth. Far more than simply a refreshment, tea restores, renews. It nourishes the body and calms the soul. These are the very principles upon which Tasty Teas was created…and it came about when a mother’s life was shaken to its very foundations……

Prompted by a life-changing cancer diagnosis in 2002, Ms. Hilda Forbes received a message from above – a dream. During her restful hours, she was greeted one evening by an angel who prompted her to read Revelation 22, verse 2, which states “the leaves are the healing of the nation.” With faith by her side and a strong family heritage behind her, Hilda accepted this message as a calling and returned to her roots to begin experimenting with old family bush tea recipes, whose ingredients have been used in Bahamian tradition to treat various ailments throughout the generations. Wanting to share her new-found passion, Hilda took to the streets and began selling her homemade teas and juices at local farmer’s markets throughout the island of New Providence.

In 2013, following in his mother’s footsteps, a young John “Jay Jay” Forbes also discovered that restoration and rejuvenation could be found in the sanctuary of a tea blend, although Jay Jay’s story is a tale of a different kind.. Enthusiastic and eager to be inspired, at the age of 23, our young entrepreneur found himself destitute and in search of employment.. Tired of waiting on opportunity to knock on his door, Jay Jay decided one fateful day to accompany Miss Hilda on her daily rounds selling her fresh, homemade teas and juices – an experience that would forever change his fate, as he was immediately struck by the enthusiastic and welcoming way in which his mother’s beloved recipes were received throughout their community. Ambition renewed and inspiration abounding, Jay Jay embarked on a mission to create the Tasty Teas brand. Based solely on his mother’s beloved teas and juices, Jay Jay transformed their home, turning it into a full-fledged tea-production facility and visitor centre.

Both Miss Hilda and Jay Jay found salvation in the fruits of their labour and the blends of their teas, perhaps even with a helping hand from those above and of days gone by, to conquer their despair and overcome their challenges.

Our young entrepreneur, once destitute and lost, received the National Youth Award from the Government of The Bahamas in 2014 for guess what – his entrepreneurial spirit – and today, the Tasty Teas production and visitor centre, still located in its original home in the heart of the Historic Delancy Towne district in downtown Nassau, receives 30,000 visitors annually.

The facility proudly produces 11 signature tea blends and a bevy of tropical juices and iced teas, which may also be purchased throughout The Bahamas in over 20 different retail outlets. Every blend is all-natural, preservative and additive-free, and cultivated using the flavors developed from the island’s bountiful fruits, herbs and plants. Trust us, nothing beats a refreshing Soursop Iced Tea, and you’ll want to believe us when we tell you nothing soothes quite like a hot cup of the Tamarind Fruit blend.. There’s also the 21 Gun Salute, originally developed by our beloved Miss Hilda to cure, well, why don’t we leave that right there..

Their most recent accomplishment? Tasty Teas has been awarded TripAdvisor’s most coveted 2017 Certificate of Excellence and Traveler’s Choice Award in the category of Tea & Coffee for The Bahamas.
